Quick Answer
Balcony solar can reduce daytime electricity use in a flat, but 800 VA is not a free pass to attach panels and use any socket. This guide separates Spanish rules from marketplace claims.
Is your balcony a useful place for solar?
Before choosing panel wattage, record the usable mounting area, direction, shading and safe cable route. Take photographs in the morning, around midday and later in the afternoon. An overhang or neighbouring building can shade a vertical panel even when the street is sunny.
Compare production with your daytime baseload using distributor readings. A fridge, router and standby loads may use some output, but their consumption does not guarantee that an 800 VA kit will be fully used. A mostly empty flat and a home office can have very different outcomes.
Ask for an estimate using your actual panel tilt and direction. A south-facing pitched-roof forecast is not a valid substitute for a vertical east-facing balcony. The European Commission PVGIS manual explains orientation and modelling inputs; nearby balcony obstructions still need a site assessment.
A realistic savings example, with the assumptions visible
Illustrative scenario, not a forecast for an 800 W kit. Suppose a site-specific estimate predicts 900 kWh per year and the home uses 60% directly. That is 540 kWh of avoided imports. At an assumed variable import price of EUR 0.20/kWh, the direct-use value is EUR 108 a year.
If only 30% is used directly, the same generation is worth EUR 54 in avoided imports. Neither figure includes export income, fixed-charge savings or subsidies. With an assumed all-in cost of EUR 900, simple cost divided by direct-use value is about 8.3 or 16.7 years respectively, before maintenance, replacements, degradation, financing or price changes.
A zero-export controller may curtail potential production when the home cannot use it. Do not count curtailed energy as paid exports. Use the calculator below as a sensitivity check, not a guaranteed return.
Compare the installed cost, not the marketplace kit price
Request separate prices for panels and inverter, approved mounting, export-control equipment where needed, electrical assessment and alterations, installation access, administrative work, delivery and tax. Ask who handles product returns if the site assessment finds the kit unsuitable.
Use the plug-in kit buying checklist before paying. For exposed balconies, review wind and mounting evidence. If common roof space is available, compare shared apartment solar rather than assuming a balcony kit is the only option.
Is plug-in balcony solar legal in Spain?
A small balcony system is still an electricity-generating installation. Its power, export mode, connection method, existing wiring, municipal rules and position on the building all matter. The 800 VA threshold changes some electrical requirements; it is not a blanket exemption from Spanish electrical, self-consumption or property rules.
Before buying, ask a registered low-voltage installer to confirm whether the system can connect without a dedicated circuit, what differential protection is required, whether it must prevent export, and what documentation applies in your autonomous community.
What 800 VA actually changes
The consolidated low-voltage rules distinguish inverter output in volt-amperes from the combined peak rating of the panels. The decisive figure is normally the inverter's nominal AC output.
- Generators with exports require a dedicated circuit regardless of power.
- Zero-export generators above 800 VA also require a dedicated circuit.
- A zero-export generator at or below 800 VA may fall within the non-dedicated-circuit provisions, but only where the equipment, leakage current, protection, documentation and existing circuit satisfy the rules.
- The access-and-connection exemption for many urbanised systems up to 15 kW is separate from electrical installation and registration requirements.
Socket connection, protection and documentation
Do not choose a kit solely because its cable ends in a Schuko plug. The installation must be assessed as a generator connected to the home wiring. The current REBT text requires type-A differential protection for nearby generation and sets conditions for homes, dedicated circuits and earth-leakage current.
For a qualifying zero-export kit connected without a new dedicated circuit, the manufacturer, importer or marketer has responsibilities for conformity documentation. That does not make every socket suitable or remove the need to establish the correct regional commissioning procedure.
Exports, registration and bill compensation
A system designed to export and receive surplus compensation needs the applicable technical and administrative process. A zero-export system needs a compliant anti-export arrangement. Treat claims such as “unused power simply disappears” or “the distributor never needs to know” with caution.
For an 800 W system, paying for export compensation may not always produce the best return. The decision depends on daytime baseload, procedure cost, tariff and expected surplus. The calculator below values only electricity used directly in the home.
Balconies, facades, landlords and communities
A panel attached to a railing can affect the facade, common elements, structural safety and people below. Article 7 of the Horizontal Property Law prevents an owner from altering the building's external configuration or safety unilaterally. Article 17 contains different voting routes for private renewable systems, common systems and wider efficiency works.
There is no responsible universal answer such as “notification is always enough.” Obtain written landlord consent when renting, check the community statutes, provide the mounting design, and ask the administrator to record the appropriate approval.
Costa del Sol mounting and wind checklist
- Confirm the railing material, condition and allowable load.
- Use mounting with documented wind resistance; straps and improvised ballast are not engineering evidence.
- Account for coastal gusts, uplift, salt corrosion and falling-object risk.
- Protect cables from abrasion, doors, standing water and UV exposure.
- Do not obstruct drainage, emergency access or neighbours' light and views.
- Tell the insurer about external generating equipment and retain approvals and invoices.
