Five things to check before accepting a solar quote

A solar quote is not just a panel price. Before you sign, make sure you understand the parts that affect your real savings, your bills and your long-term options.

1. New to solar technology?

Learn how panels, inverters, and export compensation actually work before speaking to an installer.

Read our Solar Basics Guide

2. Is the system the right size?

Too small and it will not cover enough of your usage. Too large and you may export more than your tariff properly rewards. The right size depends on your real consumption, property type and seasonal use.

3. Do you really need a physical battery?

A battery can help, but it is not automatically the best choice for every home. Holiday homes, villas with daytime pool loads and properties with low night usage may need a different approach.

Read our battery guide

4. Will it work during a power cut?

Many solar systems shut down during a grid outage unless backup/islanding equipment is designed into the system. This should be clear before you sign.

Learn about blackout backup

5. Who handles legalisation and export?

Solar paperwork, registration and surplus compensation matter. If the installation is not properly legalised, export payments or tariff changes may be delayed.

Understand export tariffs

6. Will your tariff still be right after solar?

After solar, your import pattern, export credit and fixed charges matter more than before. The cheapest pre-solar tariff is not always the best post-solar tariff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, independent answers about solar suitability, battery storage, and electricity tariffs in Spain.

Are solar panels worth it in southern Spain?
Solar panels can work very well in southern Spain, but the financial result depends on your real consumption, system size, installation price, export compensation arrangement and post-install tariff. The region has strong solar radiation and long sunny seasons, which helps productivity — but the exact return on investment varies significantly by property type, daytime usage pattern, and how well the system is sized. A practical starting point is to review your recent electricity bills alongside your daytime and evening usage before committing to a system size or battery.
Do I need a physical battery with my solar panels?
You do not necessarily need a physical battery at the start. A physical battery can help shift daytime solar generation into the evening, but it does not automatically make electricity free and it does not always provide backup power during grid cuts — that requires a specific hybrid inverter with a backup gateway module. Virtual battery billing options in Spain are often a more cost-effective way to use your solar value, particularly for holiday homes vacant for long periods. We recommend analysing your actual hourly usage profile before committing to an expensive physical battery.
What is a virtual battery for solar panels in Spain?
A virtual battery is a cloud-based billing arrangement offered by commercial energy suppliers in Spain, not a physical storage device. It allows you to convert your excess exported solar electricity into a financial credit (in euros) to reduce future electricity bills to zero, including standing charges. However, virtual batteries are not always free to run, as some suppliers charge monthly management fees or offer poorer import rates. To determine if this fits your needs, review different supplier tariff structures and their respective virtual battery conditions.
How long does the solar panel installation and registration process take?
The physical installation of residential solar panels typically takes only one to two days, but the complete legalisation and registration process can take between one and three months. This delay is due to the administrative steps required by the local town hall for building declarations and the regional industry delegation (Junta de Andalucía) to register the Certificate of Electrical Installation (CIE). You must wait until the regional distributor notifies your electricity supplier before export compensation begins. We recommend ensuring your installer handles all paperwork.
Can I completely eliminate my electricity bill with solar panels?
You can reduce the active energy portion of your electricity bill to zero, but you will still have fixed standing charges and taxes unless you use a virtual battery plan. Standard export compensation in Spain only offsets import charges up to the value of imported energy in a billing period. To offset the remaining fixed charges (potencia and meter rent), you must contract a virtual battery plan that allows credits to apply to these daily fees. A practical next step is auditing your current power capacity to avoid paying for unused grid access.
